ROAS or Profit? Read Your Store's Advertising Return Without Misleading Numbers
A high ROAS alone does not establish store profitability. Separate attributed revenue from collected orders and contribution after costs.
The same ROAS can hide different outcomes
Revenue attributed by an ad platform does not prove that all the money was collected or every order delivered. Establish whether shipping, discounts and cancellations are included. Conversely, store revenue may include other channels. Start by aligning the period and revenue definition, rather than choosing the larger of two dashboard figures.
Consider hypothetical currency units: spend of 100 and revenue of 400 produce a ROAS of 4. If the included variable order costs before advertising are 240, contribution is 160 before advertising and 60 after it. If those costs are 340, contribution after advertising is negative 40 despite identical ROAS. Fixed costs and unlisted expenses are excluded from this illustration.
The data to collect
Advertising spend for the period; identify management and production separately when analysing full cost.
Actual revenue under an agreed definition, explaining discounts, cancellations and returns.
Product costs and the payment, fulfilment and shipping costs borne by the business.
Recorded, confirmed and delivered order counts, keeping their definitions separate.
Period, attribution window and source for each number, followed by other expenses for a full profit calculation.
A simplified contribution break-even question
In a simplified model, pre-ad contribution rate equals revenue minus included variable costs, divided by revenue. If that rate is 40%, advertising breaks even against this contribution at 1 / 0.40 = 2.5 ROAS. This assumes consistent revenue definitions and a stable rate. Fixed expenses and omitted costs require a broader profitability calculation.
Use the equation to start a discussion with the person responsible for your figures, not as an automatic budget-scaling threshold. Product mix, promotions and delivery costs change the calculation. For Egypt and Saudi Arabia, analyse each market, currency and cost structure separately first. Mixing currencies or unweighted averages can conceal the problem.
Why do the platform and store disagree?
Attribution windows, event timing and order-value definitions can differ between tools. Explain these differences instead of adding revenue claimed by multiple platforms as if every figure represented separate sales. Check for duplicate purchase events too. For influencer traffic, UTM naming and reporting can help organise visit sources.
Amazon Ads defines ROAS as ad revenue divided by ad spend and explains that interpretation depends on business factors. We use that definition here; the contribution model and examples are illustrative calculations, not borrowed client results. What decision follows the numbers?
Strong clicks with weak orders warrant investigating the landing page, offer and tracking. Orders with weak contribution call for reviewing product economics and costs alongside advertising. Use a UGC testing plan rather than replacing every asset together. Share aggregated goals and scope through the brief to discuss Performance Marketing.
FAQ
Is ROAS the same as ROI?
No. ROAS compares ad-attributed revenue with ad spend. Investment return and profitability need clearly defined returns and a wider, explicitly specified cost base.
Is a ROAS of 4 good?
There is no universal answer from that figure alone. Review contribution, costs, revenue accuracy and campaign type. The example shows how identical ROAS can accompany positive or negative contribution.
Does this simplified break-even include all company costs?
No. It covers only the costs included in the contribution model. Net profit requires the other relevant expenses and review by the person responsible for accounting.
