Ecommerce Product Videos: A Shot List for the Product Page

A product-page video should clarify appearance, size, material, use and order contents. Turn purchase questions into shots with acceptance criteria. Deliver versions suited to mobile and desktop with readable captions and optional playback, then review them inside the actual page. Attractive footage alone does not demonstrate that a customer’s uncertainty was resolved.

Before comparing production companies, define where the video will be used

Give each production company the same product-page requirements: questions to answer, product and version counts, viewing context, rights, final files and acceptance review. Ask for work serving a comparable function, not just cinematic footage from another sector. This guide focuses on a product-page asset rather than repeating a general agency-selection guide or assuming every supplier offers the same scope.

Start with questions a still image cannot answer

Ask sales which misunderstandings drive hesitation or returns. Is scale unclear? Is assembly required? Is an accessory shown but sold separately? For each question, specify footage that can answer it. Do not film unsupported durability or performance claims, and do not edit away a necessary step.

A shot list connected to purchase decisions

  • Identification: show the real product, its name and version from an informative angle without obscuring details.
  • Scale: use visible measurements or an understandable, non-misleading reference, with checked written dimensions.
  • Material and finish: film close details under lighting that does not misleadingly change the colour or material.
  • Use: show the sequence from preparation to outcome; time cuts must not imply unrealistic speed.
  • Order contents: distinguish included items, separately sold accessories and display props.
  • Care and limitations: provide verified instructions and relevant restrictions, then direct viewers to specifications or version selection.

Hypothetical example: an assembled desk organiser

Instead of only filming a rotating product, show the unpacked pieces, width and height, a connection being assembled and ordinary use. If assembly tools are not included, state that clearly. Do not add a fabricated customer logo or testimonial. Label a staged demonstration as a demonstration rather than a genuine purchase experience.

Arrange the edit around buyer questions rather than filming order. Open with the product and its main use, then cover dimensions, contents and steps. A complex product may require a separate instructional video. Compressing every detail into a few seconds can make the information unreadable instead of helping a decision.

Specify delivery around the viewing context

Request a horizontal or otherwise appropriate version for the desktop page component and a mobile version when the layout differs. No single ratio suits every website. Keep essential text inside a safe area and captions readable on a small screen. The video should remain understandable without sound. Define a web-ready final file and cover image, retaining a master under the agreed terms.

Review it on the product page

Test mobile and desktop: is the product visible without harmful cropping? Are dimensions legible? Do playback controls work? Does loading delay the specifications or order button? Limit unnecessary loading and use a suitable cover image. Sound must not be required to understand the product. Agree device-appropriate loading with the developer; this guide defines content acceptance, not a website interface change.

Measure only what is implemented: video starts, movement to specifications and enquiries relating to product questions. Any sales-effect claim needs a sound comparison rather than automatic attribution. Review video production for deliverables, the shoot-day plan for execution and the UGC brief when a creator will demonstrate the product.

FAQ

Is an advertising video the same as a product-page video?

Some footage can be reused, but a product page needs explanation, specifications and objection handling. An ad may prioritise attention before detail.

Should one video cover every colour?

If differences affect purchase, identify each version accurately or provide separate clips. Do not imply footage of one colour represents all variants.

Do I need music?

It is optional and requires suitable rights. It must not mask essential explanation, and the video should work when muted.
